70 Years of Excellence: Celebrating Northwest Tank Lines’ Journey in Bulk Transportation

In the world of transportation, longevity isn’t just about how far you’ve gone, it’s about how consistently you’ve delivered along the way. This year, Northwest Tank Lines proudly celebrates 70 years of excellence in bulk transportation. What began as a small operation in Northern Ontario has grown into a respected, safety-driven company known across Western Canada and the Northwestern United States.

In this blog, we’ll take a look back at the moments that have defined Northwest’s journey, from our humble beginnings in the 1950s to the leadership transitions, major expansions, and nationally recognized safety milestones that brought us to where we are today. As we look back, we’re not just remembering milestones, we’re honouring the values that have shaped every decision, every mile, and every relationship over the past seven decades.

From One Truck to a Trusted Name: How 70 Years of Hard Work Shaped Northwest

1955–1971: Foundations in the North

The Northwest story begins in 1955 with Bill Blaney, who started hauling for an oil and gas company in Northern Ontario. Working in remote locations with extreme weather conditions, Bill learned quickly that safety, dependability, and service weren’t optional—they were essential.

These early experiences laid the foundation for what would become Northwest Tank Lines: a company where safety and people come first, and where doing the right thing matters as much as doing the job well.

1972–1990: A Business Takes Shape

In 1972, Bill officially launched the company under its own banner, building it into one of the leading bulk transportation providers in Canada. During these years, the company gained a reputation for reliable service and deep industry knowledge, especially when it came to safely hauling hazardous materials.

The focus was always clear: operate with integrity, treat drivers and clients with respect, and never compromise on safety.

1991–1996: A New Chapter in Leadership

The early ‘90s marked a transition as Bill’s son, Tom Blaney, took over the company’s leadership. With the same values at the core, Tom ushered in a new era of growth, including the 1996 acquisition of a natural gas liquids tank truck business in Western Canada.

This milestone marked the beginning of Northwest Tank Lines as we know it today. The rebrand reflected not only an expansion in services and scale but a renewed commitment to excellence in every aspect of operations.

2000s–Present: Building a Culture of Safety and Support

Over the last two decades, Northwest has continued to grow, while staying true to its family roots. Under the leadership of Tom Blaney and President Kyle Porter, the company has expanded its fleet, opened new facilities in Calgary, Sturgeon County, and Langley, and invested in the kind of culture that supports drivers and their families.

Since 2008, Northwest has also been a proud Responsible Care® partner, the only verified trucking company under this global chemical safety initiative in Western Canada. This speaks to our belief that transporting safely isn’t just good business, it’s a responsibility to our team, our clients, and our communities.

A Company Where Drivers Can Build Careers

Seventy years in business doesn’t just happen. It takes consistency, trust, and the right people behind the wheel. Today, Northwest offers Class 1 Drivers and Owner Operators more than just a job, we offer a career built on safety, respect, and stability.

Here’s what that looks like:

  • Ongoing training, including simulator events and hands-on programs
